Today I watched Election, Johnnie To's latest movie to date.
The movie starring Simon Yam, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Louis Koo, Nick Cheung
and Gordon Lam, tells how Wo Sing triad elects the person to be
the next chairman in the society.
The two candidates are 'always-under-control' Lok (Simon Yam),
'easily-lose-control' Big D (Tony Leung Ka Fai). Big D buys the votes
of some old uncles in the society but Uncle Teng defends Lok because
unity is what he thinks is more important. Lok keeps a low profile
about the election, trying to live a normal life with his son and just
say what he will do if he is the elected president. Meanwhile Big D is
always showing off, losing temper and making scenes, at the same time
that he menaces and attacks whoever looks like is going to vote against
him. Uncle Teng and the old uncles decide to choose Lok, because he means unity, and that makes
Big D to take another action: he gets men loyal to him to steal the
kind of sceptre that usually passes from one chairman to the next for
around one hundred years (I think). Those loyal to Lok try to retrieve
it for him to become officially 'the boss', among them, and at the
beginning a bit reluctant to take Lok's side, Jimmy (Louis Koo) and Jet
(Nick Cheung).
