Okay, this is mainly for [livejournal.com profile] syliasyliasylia who asked for more details about Heist, the new series starring Dougray Scott, before falling for it, since she is fan of too many series (as we all are weren't!)

Anyway,

Heist tells the adventures of a group of thieves (usually after very succulent targets). Mickey O'Neill (Dougray) and his fellow partner James (not Jim, not Jimmy and never ever Jimbo) contact some other thieves especialised in different tasks to help to success in their next 'adventure' that will reward them with half a million dollars. Those other thieves are Lola, Pops (a magnificent Seymour Cassel) and Ricky. Meanwhile there is a cop squad under the command of Amy Sykes that will try to stop them from getting their way.

The plot as you see is simple, not very original actually and having in mind the pilot I've given them the benefit of the doubt and think that they will mend things as the episodes go by. I mean there are some characters that I don't like, like Lola or Ricky (especially Ricky!), also a guy from the cop squad whose name I didn't care to remember... And the female cop, Amy, is a bit too stereotyped for my taste... However I did enjoy the game Mickey stars with her (which itself isn't very original either: the police officer - thief cat and mouse game).

I don't like Lola too much because is the typical hot chick and Ricky because is a bit stupid and because he keeps trying to attract Lola's attention miserably. The cop I mentioned I think is a supporting role that I hope doesn't last, so I'm not talking about him.

However I did enjoy things: Mickey and James conversation at the beginning of the episode is just fantastic... they are tiggering the alarm of a place they plan to get into several times until the police patrol gets tired of going once and again to check it's a false alarm. They quiz one another about Historical dates and famous people and the way they died... and when they break into the place James is telling Mickey that Madre Teresa didn't actually believe in God and exposes his reasons to say that... I won't do justice to those part of dialogue, I think is worth watching them.

Seymour Cassel's character is very touching. He has been a thief all his life and now when he was supposed to be retired, he has his wife with Alzheimer and the scene when he goes to visit her just broke my heart.

And now, finally, Dougray Scott's character, Mickey. He looks always cool and sure of himself (the American accent he uses fits him although I'll always love his Scottish one better). It seems Mickey and James are long time partners and they understand each other pretty well. I like that. The interaction between them is very good (as I've mentioned before).

Another great scene is when he first meets the police officer (I think she is detective, actually) in a supermarket. The conversation is great, although even more hilarious is when he first tries to follow what she does and goes to a salsa dance academy where she goes to learn (his face as he tries to dance with a woman is priceless).

However Mickey as a secret: he is supposed to be death. At least that's what his wife and daughter think he is. His wife has a new 'husband' and his daughter a 'new dad'. The most horrible thing is that the man taking Mickey's place was and old partner of Mickey and the man that shot him three times and thought he was dead.

I think this is a good point to explore further and the touch that makes the character not so cool and more tortured... Will see where it leads ;)

In general the pilot for Heist has good things and bad things, as all pilots, I think. I'm definitely giving it a try because there are interesting characters and I truly think that the not so good ones can get better... Also there are some storylines that could be explored and even new ones that can potencially be great to get into.

I'd watch the pilot anyway but if you aren't sure about following the series or not... well, I just can say, wait til I watch episode 2 and I will tell you what I think, but definitely Dougray looks good and makes justice to his character, I already love him! Hope the series improves, not the opposite! :S

Now some pics:

Mickey and James waiting for the cops to check the placed they are planning to break into and having one of their interesting conversations.

Mickey talking to Amy, the police detective, at the supermarket... I said talking? Flirting is more accurate...

This one, just because I think Mickey looks good in this one ;)
