Foyle's War is back. Thoughts about the ep. Invasion
I've just finished watching Foyle's War new episode: Invasion.
In general I enjoyed the episode. I was so looking forward to it! However as usual it seems just too little... I'm always with the feeling that they don't give me what I wanted... or at least not enough. And I'm even more frustrated this time since this year there are only 2 episodes instead of 4!!
Anyway.... A bit of spoilers ahead!
Invasion is placed in March 1942, when American troops are arriving and establishing themselves in British lands to help in the war. This isn't always taken nicely by the owners of the lands and the differences in character and behaviour between the British and the Americans are the perfect excuse for problems and perjudices to originate. Foyle meets the American officer in charge of the base placed close to Hastings (don't know the details about locations... I always get lost in these things). They had things in common and both have in mind to do their best so Americans and British can live together in peace. Sam has to deal with the fact that Andrew Foyle breaks up with her and how that affects her relation with Foyle senior, at the same time a young American soldier starts flirting with her. Milner investigates the murder of a friend who fought with him in Norway and died in obscure circumstances a short time after his return. However the main case they have to work in is the murder of a British young woman who was strangled during the celebration of a dance to get the Americans and the British to meet each others and all that. At the end both cases, Milner's and Foyle's are related.
The story was okay and the characters were very well chosen if you ask me. I'm surprised I don't hate the boy trying to get Sam's attention since I love Andrew to bit. But of course, Andrew behaved very wrongly writing her a simple letter saying 'I met somebody else, sorry'. I mean, if you think about it, it's very nice that he is sincere enough to tell her and not betray her, but anyway, after some letter silence from his part, that the first thing that arrives is that... and that he doesn't even say a word about it to his dad when he knows Sam works for him and the relationship between his father and Sam can suffer because of their breaking up... I don't know... I don't think he was right in they way he managed the situation.
Foyle and the American officer's relation is really nice to watch. The American (can't remember the name) is a good man who knows how the English people can feel about some strangers coming there to live there with them, taking (apparent) control of things that weren't theirs in the first place. It's very well shown how English people were suffering a lack of products, food, drinks... and how Americans brought them things they hadn't seen in a lot of time. Foyle and the officer aren't what it can be known as friends but they share a mutual understanding of the situation and try to find the things in common instead of focusing in the differences... The scene fishing and the chat Foyle offers to the American soldiers are just two points to show that.
Milner... oh, my Milner. He is my favorite character in the whole series and I don't ever get enough of him... I usually end so disappointed at the 'lack of Milner'. I'd just wish they showed us a little development in the character, a tiny window to see how the man is dealing with his life! I mean he got injured in the war, he lost part of his leg, his wife disowns him... looking and treating him like some kind of freak... and finally they divorce. Now all he has is his job and the good friendship I think he has with Sam and the understanding he has with Foyle... And of all that we only got glimpses in previous episodes... tiny ones and great part of what we think about Milner, his character and his personality, is us filling the gaps.
In this episode we don't get a thing about how Milner is in his personal life. We only see that the death of his friend impresses him quite a bit but nothing else. Especially touching is the kiss, that I think I saw, that he gives Sam when they meet at the American Base ball.
In fact, I'm a bit confused about how they wrote Milner, because the moment he loses his temper with the man in part responsible from his friend's death... I don't take it as a very in character thing for Milner to do. I mean he has been in worse situations (mentally and physically) to be closer to the edge that this one. I may be wrong in my assumption (since maybe that was the twisted way the writer had of let us know that Milner is not really dealing with what is going on in his life) but I tend to think that I'm kind of right... Milner is always in control and cool and it really took me by surprised that he asked the police officers to leave him alone with the prisoner... I don't know... it felt strange to me.
However it was nice to see a bit of the limp I really think he is supposed to have, at least in some moments when he is too tired or so... since he lost his leg... there are episodes where the limp is not there at all and let me tell you... a hint of it (like in Invasion) is good as a reminder of what Milner as a character is dealing with in his everyday life.
I miss more Milner as I miss some more Milner/Sam interaction. As I was watching, I was really hoping Sam went to Milner and shared with him what happened with Andrew over a couple of glasses of beer... like in the old times! *sigh*
Anyway, the preview for the second (and last *I want to cry*) episode of series 4, looks more interesting in what is related to the case in Foyle's hands. I just hope, for what I've read, that there are more Milner in it than it has been in the first one.
Now, I realize it really sounds like I didn't enjoy the episode. I did! I enjoyed it very much! But, as usual it leaves me with this awful feeling of 'I want more, give it to me!!' that I got before watching some others episodes.
