Si tu ne viens pas à Lagardère, Lagardère ira a toi!!
Some days ago late at night (I've tried to post this twice with no luck!!) I decided to rewatch one of my favorite movies ever: the French film, Le Bossu, also known as On Guard.
I was so waiting for it to be released in dvd! There was a French edition, I think but didn't have English or Spanish subtitles so it was a 'no,no' option for me. Finally I found a Region 2 version released in the UK! Yay!
The film is the movie version of a quite famous French novel with the same title by Paul Féval, French XIX century novelist and dramatist (contemporary of Dumas). Le Bossu tells the adventures of the prodigious swordsman, Henri de Lagardère, who disguises himself to avenge the death of the Duke de Nevers...
Lagardère is an impatient swordsman in learning that is eager to discover the secret and deadly thrust that only the Duke de Nevers knows... Both men become friends and finally Nevers teaches Lagardère his secret just before he reaches the house of Blanche de Caylus, who he wants to marry after learning she got pregnant.
However, Nevers is not the only man in love with Blanche, his cousin, the count of Gonzague is madly in love with her and also Never's only heir... He wants everything Nevers have: Blanche and money, and he'll do everything to get it.
The day of his wedding with Blanche, some hired swordsmen kill Nevers. Lagardère promises to avenge him and also to take care of Nevers and Blanche's daughter, Aurore.
He and the baby join an Italian troupe and years pass but Lagardère is busier educating Aurore than searching for her father's killer.
The troupe reaches Paris and there stars all their troubles since Lagardère discovers who the killer is and the killer realizes Aurore isn't dead.
Lagardère disguised as a hunchback to get to the man and save Aurore, but he'll have to face, sooner or later his feelings for the girl he has been protecting all her life...
Probably, the reason I like this movie so much is because Daniel Auteuil's work as Lagardère. I watched this movie for the first time at the theatres, dubbed and even there I love him since the very first moment he appeared... even sharing screen with Vicent Perez, who stars as Nevers. Auteuil manages to create a great hero, but also very human, cunning and sweet at the same time. Every time the love issue is touched in the film, watching his face you can see how much he suffers trying to keep his feelings at bay and focusing on his responsability toward Aurore.
Aurore is played by Marie Gillain, whose first movie was with Gerard Depardieu, My Father the Hero, and has been also a model for Lancôme. Fabrice Luchini plays Gonzague and Philippe Noiret has a small part as Philippe d'Orléans (very funny scenes).
As I say, Daniel Auteuil is magnificent as Lagardère... some may say that he is too older for the part but I don't think so... It's to be clear the difference of age between Lagardère and Aurore... and that is clear, he is a father figure at the beginning to change to a love interest... thing that he himself fights since he knows it's not right, apart than feeling he isn't enough for her...
He is so cute to watch... you see him so determined to learn from Nevers, he offers him a loyal friendship, he promises to take care of Aurore and avenge Nevers and he keeps his words... but at the moment to face love, he is at a lost of what to do, what to feel, what to say...
I love adventure movies, especially does with a Three Musketeers flavour, with swordfights, where loyalty, friendship and honor meant everything for men... And this one has it all!
Now a bit of pic spam ;)
