About some costume dramas
The other day I watched 'He knew he was
right' and I liked it, but maybe I am too used to complete happy endings and in
that, this one kind of fails... don't want to give too much info, because you
should watch it, at least once.
However, I’m going to tell you a tiny, tiny
bit about the main story: Louis and Emily Trevelyan are a nice married couple
until jealousy and doubt take control of Louis’ life destroying their happiness…
After watching it, I still don’t like the title too much. I understand that’s
the name Anthony Trollope gave to his novel (that I haven’t read, so maybe
there is the missing point I don’t see) but I still think another title would
have worked better… don’t know why… I have never had a problem with titles,
don’t know what happened this time.
One of the reasons I bought it was because
Laura Fraser and David Tennant were on it and because I was curious about it.
My next targets are Daniel Deronda and The Way We Live Now.
What I like the most in ‘He knew he was
right’ are the several tiny stories that are told at the same time than the
main one and that are even better than this one, but because they aren't the
important ones, they don't get too much screen time, a real pity. Just a
curiosity: Toby Stephens' wife has a small part in one of those tiny stories.
But the miniseries has also discovered me a couple of actors I may have to
check out: Raymond Coulthard and Matthew Goode.
This brings me to what I actually wanted to
say: I think it happens to me every single time I watch a costume drama... and
that is that I come back to re-watch those dramas and series I like so much…
like Wives & Daughters that takes me to watch Foyle’s War later.
I like everything about Wives and
Daughters: the cast, almost all characters, the story, practically all the
actors/actresses, the music… I love it so much that sometimes I forget that the
first time I watched it I missed, as some other fans of this BBC costume drama,
the kiss between Roger and Molly. However, I love the scene in the rain so
much!!!
I bought W&D because I watched the
first episodes of Foyle’s War, that I bought because Michael Kitchen was on it
and in both of them is Anthony Howell.
I think someday I will have to talk about
how my mind works about actors and movies and series and all that, but not
today.
Foyle’s War is really good, love the
characters, love the story… I find really interesting and really unattended the
story of Sgt. Milner. I mean that man suffered a tragedy and there isn’t enough
screen time about how he deals with things and what is wrong with that awful
wife of him. I would love if they had explored it more. I understand that Foyle
is the main character but come on, it would be nice if they give us a little
more… We always have fics but there are only a couple or three fics about him.
I need more Milner so I now I have some fic ideas in my head that I don’t know
if I’ll manage to write or not. *sigh*
I really miss Foyle’s War right now. I visited the main forum for the series because series 4 was supposed to be aired in November, but instead, I discovered that until early 2006 nothing!! To make it worse, this season only has 2 episodes instead of 4, so it’s too little, too late!! :S

What I like the most in "He knew he was right" are the several tiny stories that are told at the same time than the main one and that are even better than this one This is the same in a case of “The Way We Live Now”, it must be a way Anthony Trollope writes his books, I was more interested in some “tiny stories” in the “The Way We Live Now” more then in the main romance sometimes ;)

'He knew he was right' came with a documentary about the author butI didn't have time to watch it all. It was narrated by Stephen Fry, which made me happy ;)
I love to rewatch things I love, but it's curious that watching one costume drama, makes me want to watch more ;) It usually doesn't happen to me with movies.

Join the club! You can say the same about nearly every character unfortunately - including Foyle! There's so much that hasn't been explained or explored - Milner and his leg and the Ice Queen - Foyle and his background - Sam and how she is dealing with Andrew - not to mention the total disappearance of Hugh Reid!
We've got a "Missed Opportunities" thread somewhere on the board for all of that. I think Anthony Howell tries to tell so much in one film that all the character stuff gets cut to make room for the mystery, even on the UK transmission. I'd watch a series just on the characters, bugger the mystery!
Get writing on the fic - we always need more fic! :)

I really would like them to focus a bit more in the characters than in the mysteries too, and it doesn't help that series 4 is just two episodes!!! :(
You are so right! So much hasn't been explored and that should be! I personally would like to see more Milner because I think is the character less explored even after they gave him so much to deal with and so much to explain about his life! I like all the main characters, of course, and even if they give us more about Foyle or Sam personal life it would be great, but I really think it would be unfair since they gave Milner so much baggage! (why they leave it completely unexplored).
