Adrien Brody is Manolete
Okay, first things first, so you know my position: I don't like bullfights at all. I think they're cruel and it hurts me watching any of them. Besides I don't know a thing about all its meaning for those out there who loves them. Sorry, I just don't understand!

However, I'm kind of interested in this movie: 'Manolete' based in the life of one of our most famous bullfighters. It's placed in Spain in the 40s and Adrien Brody plays the main part and Penelope Cruz as his love interest, Lupe Sino.

First of all, here's the link to info about Manolete in Wikipedia.

Basically the only thing that attracts me about this movie, is watching that time turn into images, because bullfighters of the 40s and 50s led lives full of glamour... and for the first time there is a movie about it. And honestly, the other thing that makes me curious about it is the great resemblance between Adrien Brody and Manolete himself.

The 40s and 50s were the times when Hemingway, Ava Gardner or Orson Welles enjoyed coming to watch the 'fiesta' at the Ventas (the most famous bullring in the world, that is here in Madrid).

Besides he was the first famous bullfighter and his life and death is kind of a legend among those interested in the issue. His love story wasn't complete, for what I've heard, and his death was very tragic for what I know...

Penelope and Adrien in a kissing scene. This pic is this week's news.

Again, both of them together. Sorry the quality.

Adrien dressed before a bullfight with his 'cuadrilla' (his men).

Before the bullfight, the bullfighters pray for their safety.

Adrien and Penelope again together as Manolete and Lupe.

More pics of him as the bullfighter. sorry the quality.

I think this one is of Adrien training. He was here being trained by a real bullfighter. The filming is in several places of Andalusia and the Mediterranean coast, btw, and includes some other Spanish actors too.

A very not-at-all glamourous pic of Adrien as Manolete and Penélope as Lupe (not glamourous for Penélope anyway).

So you see the resemblance. Here is a pic of Manolete and Lupe.

Another one of Manolete so you can compare Adrien dressed as Manolete and the real man.

The filming is still going on and we get news about it here because not everyday a Hollywood star films here and also because whatever Penélope does is kind of news (I don't especially like her, btw). Now the gossip: there have been rumors about Penélope and Adrien getting romantically involved in real life... others say that Adrien is with another Spanish actress, that I like better than Penélope, Elsa Pataki.

Wow. I didn't know about this movie, but it sounds really amazing! You are right, Brody and Manolette look freakishly similar.

When I ahd Mr. Mousie were in Spain last year, we tried to go to a bullfight in Madrid, but it was all sold out :(

I think is kind of normal you don't know about the movie... I mean I think is mainly a Spanish production with an American actor as the lead... But, well, I've just mended that ;) now you know and can keep an eye on it.

It really looks good and I'm so curious to see Adrien playing the bullfighter.

It's kind of difficult to go some bullfights in Madrid, mainly if they are during the main fair (in May), because there are a lot of people who reserves seats for all the bullfights and also as they are the most important ones, people buy them quite early.

I have been to las Ventas when I was a kid because one of my childhood friend's dad loved the bullfights and told us that we couldn't say we didn't like them until we saw one. It wasn't a big one, but I didn't enjoy watching it, although to be honest, the things around it, the people having fun, eating, drinking, chatting, was kind of entertaining.

I find it very interesting that you are so much against bull fighting - I have a Spanish friend here and she is also so much against it!! I never thought anything against bullfighting before, but now I understand!

Brody looks very much like Manolette !!

Well, I don't know if you've seen a bull fighting before, on tv or something... but for me it's something so not nice to see!! I don't want to sound too raw but the animal suffers and bleeds until the bullfighter kills it and I don't like to see that.

In Portugal, for example, they don't kill the animal, for what I've heard, although I think it also suffers anyway...

The rest of elements about the bull fighting is great, full of traditions and all... but the other part, I just can't manage to see...

However I'm very curious about the movie... Most bull fighters here are in the society magazines and stuff... so I want to see how it was in the most glorious times ;)

This looks fascinating. I don't like Adrian Brody or bull fighting (you remember this user icon ;) but the movie looks very interesting and I'll watch it if it comes out. Thanks for letting us know about it!!

Exactly that happens to me... don't like bull fighting, don't especially like Adrien... but, the movie looks great, so I'm really curious.

Glad to be useful... You know I can talk about movies and series until I bore people to death, so ;)

Hope this movie comes out with subtitles :P The pics look great, give the feel of a very important movie.

I suppose it will get subtitles in some places, if they want people to watch it, yes... I don't actually know if everybody speaks English in the movie (I doubt it) or just Adrien and he'll be dubbed (more probable)...

But it looks good so I hope the final results is worth watching!!

Adrien Brody looks like Manolete
I just finished Barnaby Conrad's book, "The Death of Manolete." It is uncanny how much Adrien Brody resembles Manolete-except for the scar on Manolete's left cheek from a previous bullfight wound. The book has fantastic pictures of Manolete and his final fight. It tells the story of the rivalry between Manolete (at that point on the downhill side of his career) and the arrogant newcomer, Dominguin. It will be interesting to see how the movie portrays Manolete's girlfriend, Lupe Sino, played by Penelope Cruz. Sino desired for him to continue to fight, while he wanted to quit. It will also be interesting to see how Adrien Brody depicts Manolete's famous coup de grace over the bull's horns and front shoulders. The move ultimately led to his death. Check out the book, "The Death of Manolete" by Barnaby Conrad published by Pippin Publishing, www.pippinpublishing.com.com (http://www.pippinpublishing.com).
