I've just heard on tv that today we celebrate Internet's Day. I'm pretty sure it's something just for Spain, but well, if I'm wrong, even better because more people are celebrating ;)
The shocking thing I've learned today, although I'm not really surprised, it's that Spain is in the 17th place from the 25 of the UE in the use of Internet, that our cheapest connection fare is the most expensive in Europe and that 54% of the Spanish population says they don't use Internet.
Not only that but a study from January 2004 said that 53% of people knew what Internet was but didn't use it... so things aren't better than 3 years ago! O_o'
This is partly due to the lack of infrastructures that makes connections in some parts of Spain almost impossible, and another is the lack of involvement from the government in the task of making Internet as something attractive and useful for everybody. Although the true is that both things go together, if you don't have the first one, it's easier to fail in the second too... so *sigh*
The numbers about people using Internet aren't too encouraging either. 80% of Internet users here only use it to look for information or checking their emails, around 40% to get music and/or movies, only 26% use it also to check their bank accounts and stuff like that, and only a 15% to buy things online. *more sighs*
(that last number makes me part of a minority in Spain, which it doesn't bother me at all, believe me!, but it's just curious if I have in mind that most of my online friends (especially LJfriends) from all over the word also buy online and most of the Internet services mentioned above. I wonder which percentage all you are in your respective countries...)
The article I got all this from added something kind of 'positive' and that is that although there aren't a lot of Internet users here, they ARE working hard adding content (since blogging has been considered here as the last 'cool thing to do' there are a lot of people creating their own, and a lot of people here use YouTube and podcasts.
Still, people here have a lot to learn (not just the future Internet users, but also local authorities, the government, the Education system, teachers, parents, etc.) about new technologies and all Internet has to offer. Hope next year the numbers has changed ;)
